(FREDERICTON, NB) Mitchell Spragg can run great distances in very short periods of time, but he’s not running too far to attend university.
The Douglas, New Brunswick, native has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the UNB Varsity Reds track & field and cross country teams.
“We’re extremely pleased to add Mitch to this year’s first-year group,” said Varsity Reds cross-country coach Tim Randall. “Having coached Mitch during his high school career, I know that he brings a great work ethic and an enormous desire to be a top runner.”
Spragg has been running for the Lions, at Fredericton’s Leo Hayes High School, as well as with the Fredericton Legion Track Club.
In 2016, he was the top-ranked male in New Brunswick in the outdoor 1500 and 3000 metre events.
Spragg won the 10K event at the 2016 Fredericton Fall Classic and took 4th in the 1500-metres at the Athletics Canada Indoor Championships.
“I’m very excited about the skill set he brings to UNB,” said Varsity Reds track & field coach Chris Belof. “He’ll have a big impact on our program and the direction we want to head in the future.”
Spragg will study Business Administration at UNB.
“I’m looking forward to being a part of the UNB teams,” he said. “They have a great coaching staff, and there’s a lot of potential in our conference in the coming years.”
Spragg will join the Varsity Reds beginning in the 2017-18 season.
