(MONCTON, NB) Carl Marois (Montmagny, QC) scored the only goal of the shootout to give l'Universitè de Moncton Aigles Bleus a 4-3 win over the UNB Reds, in a rare Tuesday night Atlantic University Sport game.
Marois, the fifth Moncton shooter, beat Reds netminder Alex Dubeau (Mascouche, QC), on what proved to the final shot.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with UNB's Cam Brace (Etobicoke, ON) opening the scoring, on the power-play, at 9:53 of the first.
The Reds would carry their 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but not much longer.
Robbie Graham (Richibucto, NB) drew the home team even, scoring at 2:42 of the second.
Moncton took a 2-1 lead when Marc-Anthony Therrien (Nicolet, QC) scored almost seven minutes later.
Olivier Desjardins (Drummondville, QC) set up both of Moncton's second period goals.
With less than 90 seconds left in the second, and UNB once again working the power-play, Mark Rassell (Calgary, AB) scored to make it a 2-2 hockey game.
Matt Boucher (Los Angeles, CA) drew assists on both of UNB's first two goals.
At 4:33 of the third, Maxime St-Cyr (St-Didace, QC) gave Moncton a 3-2 lead, but the Reds wouldn't let that lead stand long.
30 seconds later, UNB defenceman Matt Murphy (Woodstock, NB) joined a rush and scored to make the score 3-3.
Dubeau and Moncton netminder Etienne Montpetit (Valleyfield, QC) held their ground the rest of the way, and through the five minute 3-on-3 overtime.
About a minute into the extra frame, Montpetit made two big saves on Brace, including one on a breakaway, setting the stage for Marois' shootout winner.
The Reds remain unbeaten in regulation and sport a record of 7-0-2.
Moncton is now 5-3-2.
Les Aigles Bleus visit UPEI on Friday, before the Panthers visit the Reds on Saturday.
Both games are scheduled for 7:00pm starts.
