(FREDERICTON, NB) The two-time defending U SPORTS men’s hockey champion UNB Varsity Reds have welcomed Andrew Connors as an assistant coach ahead of the 2017-18 season.
Connors served as an assistant last season with the St. Stephen Aces, of the Maritime Hockey League, working alongside Aces head coach Josh Hepditch, a former Varsity Red and three-time national champion.
He was also involved with Hockey New Brunswick’s Under-16 program during the 2016-17 season.
Previously, he served three seasons as an assistant with the St. Thomas University men’s hockey team.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, Connors worked six seasons as a linesman in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Atlantic University Sport.
“Andrew is a great addition to our UNB Hockey program,” said Varsity Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He has a great deal of passion in making a difference with the players he coaches and adds a tremendous work ethic and vibrant personality.”
Connors graduated from UNB in 2014 with a Recreation and Sport Studies degree, with Dean’s List honours.
Along with his coaching duties, Connors will also serve as Director of the V-Reds Prospects Youth Development Program.
“We have been very impressed with his rapid coaching development and are excited to have him join our program,” said MacDougall.
Connors joins a veteran staff that includes associate coach Rob Hennigar, assistant coaches Brad Good and Charlie Cameron, and goaltending coaches Dan LaCosta and Kyle MacDonald.
