(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds improved to 2-and-0 Saturday with a 103-85 win over the Cape Breton University Capers.
Javon Masters(Kitchener, ON) led all scorers with 31 points. He was a stellar 13 for 14 from the free throw line, and contributed six assists and grabbed six rebounds.
Masters was named the Subway Player of the Game.
"It's nice to get off to a good start, especially against a scrappy Cape Breton team," said Masters of his team's perfect start. "It got a little chippy near the end, but that comes with playing in the AUS."
Will Legere(Amherst, NS) continued his resurgence, scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds.
Martin Campbell(Upper Marlboro, MD) led the Capers, scoring 29 points and grabbing nine rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
With their 0-and-2 start, the Capers have lost 22 straight, including an 0-20 run last season.
"It's a little disappointing, but we showed we've got a good group of guys," said Campbell. "Everything is going to be okay, we've just got to turn that corner."
The Varsity Reds got 32 points from their bench, while Cape Breton's contributed just 15.
UNB took advantage of Capers turnovers too, scoring 25 points off turnovers.
"We beat ourselves these past two games," said Campbell. "Once we all join together, and buy into the system, we'll be fine."
In the two weekend wins, Masters scored a total of 55 points.
After a down season of sorts, where he played the role of distributor, last season, Masters says he's back.
"There's more of an offensive burden for me, but at the same time, we've got a lot of guys that can put the ball in the hoop," he said. "I'm just trying to play my type of game. I'm still trying to get my teammates involved, if they're open for a shot, I'm going to pass it to them. I have all the faith in the world in those guys."
The Capers return home and host Saint Mary's in a weekend double-header.
The Huskies were the last team the Capers beat in regular season play, back on February 27th, 2016.
The Varsity Reds go on the road for a pair of games at UPEI.
