UNB Wrestlers garner Gold and Bronze medals

On day two of the CIS Championship held at Western University three UNB wrestlers earned medals while Samantha Stewart was named CIS outstanding female wrester.

Stewart was named CIS outstanding female wrestler thanks to her gold medal 3-0, 4-0 victory over Saskatchewan’s Koren Pitkethly in the 59 kg final. Earlier in the tournament, she had defeated Alberta’s Jamie Bergenstrom 8-0, Calgary’s Jessie Seida 4-1 and 7-0, and Western’s Andrea Wakelin 5-0, 7-0.

Stewart, a 4th year Kinesiology student from London, Ontario, was the gold medal winner in this same weight class in 2011.

In the 72 kg class Shawn Daye-Finley came away with the bronze medal. Daye-Finley, a fourth year Arts student from Dartmouth, NS, was the gold medallist in the 68 kg class in 2011.

Also winning hardware was Grayson St. Laurent, a first year Kinesiology student from Upper Tantallon, NS. St. Laurent defeated Eric Steffler of McMaster University for the bronze medal.

The women’s team placed 9th overall with 14 points while the men’s team placed 7th with 26 points. Both teams improved their ranking over the 2012 championship when the women finished 13th overall and the men 10th.
